The Biggest Challenges When It Comes to Employee Engagement

Table of Contents

As an employer, you would want your employees to work together as a coherent unit. Not only will it boost productivity, it will also help improve employee retention rates. But sadly, not many employees work in tandem, in fact, according to a survey by Gallup; employee engagement worldwide is at an all-time low at 13%. Disengaged employees are costing the American economy a whopping $350 billion a year.

Clearly, something has to change.

These are some of the biggest challenges companies face when it comes to employee engagement:

1. Head in the Game Phone

Surprisingly, one of the biggest obstacles when it comes to employee engagement is getting the employees to stop spending more time with their phones and start interacting with other employees instead. With the world becoming a veritable global village, it’s no surprise that every one of us has become addicted to the ubiquitous black screens. 34% of managers have reported this as a roadblock to employee engagement.

2. High Turnover Rate and New Employees

For companies that have a high turnover rate and those who recruit new employees every year will find it difficult to get the employees interact with each other. People who’ve been working together with each other year after year will find themselves forming a bond with their co-workers. A company should primarily give their employees a reason to stay and then work on employee engagement from there.

3. Employee Engagement in a Multigenerational Workforce

Another quite common barrier to employee engagement is having employees that are multigenerational. Waging together Baby Boomers, Gen X-ers and Millenials and getting them to find a common ground may seem tough. Boomers and Gen X-ers will complain about the Millennials lack of experiences while on the other hand, Millennials will want a more fun and flexible workplace environment. Get them to engage in activities that are above generational differences; food, laughter, and the great outdoors being some of them.

4. Lack of Trust

Trust is not a one-man show but a two-way street; teamwork is based upon mutual trust. But a lack of employee engagement will lead to a lack of trust in the workforce. Around 87% of employees are less likely to leave a company where trust is valued. Encourage building trust in the workplace by having your employees take part in teambuilding games that require trust and teamwork.
